It's only a minor nuisance.  It doesn't seem to be happening as often as it was at first, and it's an easy "fix" (to reload or go to a different board) if nothing can be done about it except to stop using AOL, LOL!

Because you don't get logged out at TF, I'm going to take a based-on-ignorance, wild-assed guess that it may take time for AOL's caching system (or whatever that is) to build up 'knowledge' about this board.

Let me see if there's some way to speed up the process, or if there some setting in the software or trick to make it go away.  I know it's minor, but it's still a nuisance ... especially where it doesn't happen at TF.

ETA:  Thread posted at SMF.  I will (of course!) report back as soon as I get a reply.

Update:  No reply at the SMF forum yet.  People aren't supposed to bump help topics.  I'll wait a couple of days, and then go give it a nudge if they haven't answered.

Thanks for checking, Beth.  It's really not a huge problem if we don't get a solution, but it *is* a puzzle, since it doesn't happen with TF.

Okay, this is a bit of a problem. Because it will not let me log into the Sisterhood stories. It did a few minutes ago, but now nothing I do will get me in there. Even if I log back in it kicks me out as a Guest. Frustrating....

Don't worry about logging back in.  Just hit reload -- the yellow curvy arrow at the upper left of the screen.  It will put you right back in.  If it asks for a password, just hit the reload button again without typing anything.

Still no response at the SMF forum.  rolleyes

let me try some more Google-fu over there.  There's GOT to be some way to get AOL to accept this board faster.  I did some reading last night, not just on how AOL treats the board, but how their browser functions overall.  I *think* this has to do with their rotating IP's.  Even in the middle of a browsing session, the IP may change.  I'm theorizing that when that happens, it takes a refresh for the board to recognize you again.

Just to confirm, because I've never used AOL, does AOL have its own browser?  Or is this just the "doorway" through which you access the internet?  Do you have to open up either IE or Firefox first, then go to AOL, then here?

Take a look at something in your computer settings for me, please.  Don't change it.  Just tell me how it's set.

In your browser, go here:

Tools >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Security

Scroll down and see whether the following box is checked or unchecked:

"Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed"

ETA:  I bumped my thread at the SMF forum.  We're not supposed to do that, but it had slid to page 10 rolleyes .  At the very least, maybe a Mod will get ticked at me and say something.  At least that way I'll get noticed.  devil

I hit reload a dozen times. Nothing. Very strange. I'll try the Tools thing Beth...and it says it's unchecked. Oh, and I go straight to aol when I go to the computer. Don't have to go through anything else... I know it'd just be easier if I quit using aol, but I've been using it for so long now that I'm stuck in rut. I just don't normally use anything else so it's aggravating not to be able to.

And,  of course, this morning I'm not having a problem with it...yet. *sigh*

Try checking that box and hitting the Okay button, Chris.  I'm not sure it will make a difference, but one article on AOL that I read suggests that by clearing out those temporary folders, it will force AOL to renew its information, instead of using cached pages.

I'm going to give the SMF forum 24 hours to answer my thread.  If they don't I'll try submitting a Low Priority Support Ticket to MonteCarlo to see if Christian has any ideas.

Okay, Beth, when I'm using AOL, I use their software, which is its own browser -- but which uses IE as the basis.  I don't actually HAVE a "Tools" setting on AOL.  Let me look around and see what I can find to get the same info (I know it's there, I just have to find it....not sure where Chris looked, LOL!).  If I need to, I can at least check and see how it's set up on IE.....

ETA:  Okay, it sent me to IE to check those settings.   rolleyes  My box is NOT checked.

ETAA:  D'oh, okay, I'll check it and we'll see what happens.....

ETAA:  And thus far, it hasn't made a difference.  We'll see what happens tonight when I've had the browser off and restarted....

Still no response at the SMF forum.  >:(

I didn't want to make this a Support Ticket item, so I PM'd Christian (owner/operator/guru of Monte Carlo) though the SMF forum with the question.  He's a Board Mod there, so I'm hoping we'll get an answer out of him within the next 24 hours.

Got an answer from Christian.  He wasn't sure this would address the true problem, but it's worth the effort.

In your browser (I'm not sure if you can do this in the AOL browser.  You might have to open IE7 and do it there) ...

Tools --> Internet Options --> Security -->Trusted Sites

Click on the Sites button.
UNCHECK the box next to "Require server verification ..."

Under "Add this website to the zone" make sure it says http://www.farscapefluffybunnies.com

Click Add.  Close.  OK.

I hope this helps.  After this, we might be out of good suggestions from any normal SMF resources.  Next step might be Brent Barrett or your kids, Lee.

I tried to figure out if AOL is an actual stand-alone browser, or something that "piggy-backs" on IE7.  I can really tell.  It is using IE as a 'platform', so when it gets installed, it may wind up using certain settings from IE7.  dunno  Kelson might be able to answer that question.  Either way, I'm hoping that changing the trusted site setting in IE7 will change AOL as well.

Christian said there are a number of 'known issues' between AOL and SMF.  Why you haven't run into them at TF is anyone's guess.  Just lucky maybe.

Okay, I've changed that setting.  We'll see how it goes.  It's definitely interesting that I've never had an issue with TF.  But, seriously, if it's too annoying, I'll simply use IE or Firefox -- I have both on the computer, and they work fine.  I can even leave AOL up for e-mail while I do it.

Thanks so much for all the research, Beth!!

Thanks so much for all the research, Beth!!

It's been fun and educational.  I much prefer chasing down a low priority, non-critical issue like this than running around in total ignorance trying to figure out why the forum isn't working at all.  One is fun; the other is the definition of stress.  ;D

Well, I'm glad you had fun, LOL, because it hasn't helped.  It still shows me as a "GUEST" from time to time, or asks me to log in when I try to get to an admin/bunny area.  But just hitting reload seems to convince it I'm actually logged in, so it's still a minor nuisance.

I think we're fresh out of options, though.  laugh

It's not any help, but I finally got a reply at the SMF forum.  They confirmed that users run into problems with AOL, and had no suggestions on any way to resolve it.  Thbt!

All that waiting for nothing.  Pathetic!  LOL!

Well, I will say it doesn't seem to happen as often as it did in the beginning.  But at least it's staying really minor (and I don't have a problem at work at all, since I use IE).  And I do have the option of using IE or Firefox at home.
