This was just a little somethin somethin I wrote after starting a John and son fic.... It doesn’t amount to much, not long at all, but I thought I’d share.
Thanks ac for the instant beta. You’re a doll.
Rated: G It’s all D’Argo and Chiana, deal with it. *g* Disclaimer: Not mine
I Want One
Chiana watched John and Aeryn walk out the door of the cargo bay, oblivious to everything, their heads bent over the small form so bundled in blankets you could barely see the baby’s face.
“Frell,” she whispered under her breath.
She glanced over where D’Argo stood and moved silently to his side.
“Whatcha doin’?”
He grimaced. “What do you think I’m doing? I’m trying to unloaded the transport pod by myself.” He gave a disgusted snort towards the doorway where his ‘helpers’ had disappeared.
Chi trailed a finger up his arm. “I could help,” she offered.
Another snort, this time disbelieving. Then he smiled. “Okay. Pick that up.” He pointed to a box sitting by the door of the pod waiting to be unloaded.
She grinned back at him. How hard could it be to lift one box anyway? She bent over and spread her legs to get her balance and put her hands on either side of the box.
She tugged. Nothing.
Frell.
She pushed. It didn’t budge.
She saw D’Argo’s smirk and she kicked it. “Owwwww!” She danced around the cargo bay trying to hold her foot and stay upright at the same time.
“Frell! You did that on purpose!” She accused the Luxan as he came to stand in front of her. “What’s in that thing?”
D’Argo just grinned. His eyes danced with laughter and she thought she’d never seen a sweeter sight even if she had a sore foot because of it. And then she remembered why she’d sought him out in the first place.
He started to turn and she grabbed his arm.
“Hey. Wait a microt.”
“What is it Chiana? I have to unload these supplies before they get loose.”
She turned a startled glance at the boxes again and then ignored the comment. It didn’t pay to ask. A hard lesson, but true.
“I was...I was just wondering something.”
He waited for her to continue.
And waited.
He watched her head swing from side to side. This was not good. He didn’t like it when Chi looked nervous.
“And...?”
“And what?”
“What were you wondering?”
She took a deep breath. “Well, you know Robby?”
“The baby?”
“Yeah, the baby.”
He waited again for her to continue, but she was looking at something on the floor and seemed in no hurry.
He sighed. “What about the baby?”
“I’ve been thinking that maybe we could, you know....” she waved her hands as her voice trailed off.
He could feel his face starting to frown, but he said calmly, “No. I don’t know. What are you trying to say?”
Chi leaned over and whispered in his ear. “I want one.” Now he was confused. “One what?”
“A baby, you wellnitz.”
His eyes grew wide as he mouthed her words back to her in disbelief. “A baby?” He backed up. “You mean...” he pointed back and forth from her to himself “...you mean, you and me...?”
She gave a nervous giggle. “Yeah. You and me. Wouldn’t that be the draddest?”
D’Argo looked around horrified. It was just him and Chi with no rescue in sight.
He could barely get the words out. “Yes, but...”
“We could shop with John and Aeryn and buy all kinds of cute clothes and play games and if it was a boy he could grow up to be just like…”
“Chiana!”
His bellow stopped her desperate rambling.
“Chiana.” He tried to keep his voice low. “Be reasonable. You remember the test . We can’t...” He stopped.
It wasn’t until he started to say the words that he realized how much they hurt. He would have liked to share a child with this mercurial creature he loved so much. A small white haired, curious little girl or a boy with Tenka’s like his own. He tamped down the sorrow that welled up inside him at the thought that she would never know that happiness. And she wouldn’t as long as she stayed with him. But he loved her too much to let her go now. This was their life.
He just had to convince her of it.
“But…but maybe the test was wrong? Huh? Maybe if we went to a diognosan and we asked…”
He interrupted her again. “I already asked.”
She turned her big black eyes to his. “You what?”
There was no way to get out of this now so he told her. “On the Royal Planet. After we took the test. I asked the physicians there if there was any way to… you know.” Now it was his turn to gesture.
“You asked them if we could have a baby?”
“Yes.”
“And they said no?”
“Yes. I mean no. I mean yes they said no we can’t have a baby.”
He watched the play of emotion over her face and then the most amazing thing happened. She smiled her wide open smile and flung her arms around his broad back, hugging him as hard as she could. He wondered if he would ever understand her.
“Chiana? Are you feeling well?”
She was nuzzling against his neck almost purring. “I’m fine D’Argo. Why didn’t you tell me you went to the diognosan?”
“I didn’t want you to be upset if the results weren’t to our liking. And they weren’t. I thought it was best to leave it like it was. And of course afterwards…” He stopped. Better not to talk about that.
Her face dropped for a microt reflecting on what they couldn’t talk about. But her irrepressible nature wouldn’t let her stay focused on the past for long. Once again happiness bubbled up inside her.
“Hurry up and get these unloaded. I want to see what you got. And then I want to see Robby again. He is so disgusting when he blows those spit bubbles don’t you think?”
Before she could pull away he said, “Chiana.”
“What?” She looked at him her head cocked to one side.
“I... Well, I thought that you wanted a baby?”
She looked thoughtful. “Yeah, well, maybe I just wanted you to want one. With me. That’s enough.” And before he could say anything she kissed him quickly and scooted out of the cargo bay.
He watched her go and smiled slowly. “Yes,” he whispered to himself. “That’s enough.”
The end
